Through this artistic collaboration with Marcin Rusak, Maison Perrier-Jouët invites us to discover the hidden language of plants and explore new ways of understanding the living world.

The Collaboration

Maison Perrier-Jouët was founded in 1811 by Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and Rose-Adélaïde Jouët, a young couple united by their love of art and nature, and their singular vision of champagne. Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and his son Charles were keen botanists, a passion that inspired their progressive ideas on natural viticulture and vineyard management. Drawing on this legacy, the House has never ceased to question the complexity of the living world and the symbiosis between species.

Perrier-Jouët is proud to unveil a collaboration with multidisciplinary Polish designer Marcin Rusak, stemming from a shared heritage centered on botany. As the descendant of flower-growers, botanical matter is central to Marcin Rusak’s creative practice. Since the beginning, his practice has been founded on inspiration drawn from nature and experimentation with new materials, resonating with the Art Nouveau ethos that inspires Maison Perrier-Jouët.

To improve our knowledge of the species with whom we share our ecosystem, we need to understand how they communicate.

Inspired by its botanical heritage, Maison Perrier-Jouët encourages us to question the complexity of the living world. For over a decade, the House’s collaborations with creative talents have helped illustrate and develop these reflections, in both prospective and contributive terms.

Following discussions with the scientific committee of Maison Perrier-Jouët in the House’s vineyards, Marcin Rusak focused his work on understanding the unique character of the Perrier-Jouët terroir, taking interest in the plants that play a key role in preserving their ecosystem. This led him to select three “hero plants”, which remain at the heart of the collaboration : the vine, European Birtwort and white clover.

The Installation

Fascinated by these plants, Marcin Rusak discovered the work of two doctorate graduates from the University of Kraków who revealed that plants emit ultrasound signals when dehydrated. Through Plant Pulses, the artistic experience crafted by Marcin Rusak for Maison Perrier-Jouët, these signals are made audible and visible to humans. Plant Pulses is composed of an imposing sculpture, a contemporary herbarium combining plants and natural materials collected by the artist when he visited the House’s vineyards and preserved in resin.

Building on the scientific and multidisciplinary basis of Plant Pulses, Marcin Rusak collaborated with a sound designer and a digital artist to make the research on plant communication tangible. In this soundscape, the plant’s pulses are amplified and accompanied by a new visual language. Visitors can contemplate the pulses from seats specially crafted by the artist with plants he collected when he visited Epernay. Through Plant Pulses, Marcin Rusak invites us to rethink our perception of the plant world and our relationship with the ecosystems that sustain it.
