THE YEAR
1988
Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque 1988 is a cuvée originating from the most famous grands crus in Champagne. It was a year in which nature offered a harvest of rare quality, allowing Maison Perrier-Jouët to develop a complex, elegant and assertive wine.
The 1988 vintage saw a calm year, with a mild and rainy winter, abundant spring rains, and a hot, sunny summer. Early spring growth gave way to favourable maturation of the grapes. Harvest began in late September, in good weather conditions, starting with the Pinots, soon followed by the Chardonnay.

SERVICE RITUALS

Symphonic Bloom Belle Epoque 1988 by Iris van Herpen
The Terroir
This blend is made from Chardonnay grapes from Cramant, whose finesse and elegance are enriched by Pinot Noir from Mailly, Verzy and Bouzy, which bring power and structure to the wine.
The Taste
Matured, after disgorgement, for 32 years in Perrier-Jouët’s Eden cellar in Epernay, this vintage has a timeless style – revealing elegance, finesse and structure – with a serious capacity for further ageing.
The Moment
Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque 1988 is best enjoyed at a temperature of 10°C as an aperitif and at 12°C during a meal. Just as a long period of ageing has allowed this champagne to develop all of its aromas, additional time is required to fully appreciate it. To allow the wine to reach the desired serving temperature, remove the bottle from refrigeration a quarter of an hour before opening. Once served – ideally in a wine glass rather than a traditional flute – it needs to breathe for a few minutes. This cuvée pairs perfectly with salt-crusted sea bass or aged Parmesan.
