ALL’OMBRA DELLA LUCE BY RITSUE MISHIMA

All’ombra della luce is a stunning installation, a truly immersive experience in which light and shadow are the two protagonists. At the centre of a vast space with walls decorated with a stylistic anemone pattern, a large wooden structure partially covered in mirrors invites the visitor to contemplation: a ceiling disappearing under a multitude of colourless hand-blown glass discs of different sizes and shapes, suspended in the air, each one wearing the marks of the artist’s unique crafted work. Dangling above the mirror surface, their reflections play with the light, catching the eye in games of transparency, creating a luminous and poetic choreography.

A second creation is dedicated to the ritual of serving champagne: a large hand-blown glass bowl. Pairing a bold design with hand craftsmanship, the round lines of its organic shape evoke the effervescence of champagne, while the power and fragility of the transparent glass material create an astonishing contrast.

In their own way, each one of these art pieces illustrates Perrier-Jouët’s champagne philosophy: artistic craftsmanship enriched with authenticity, elegance and a real fondness for nature and its delights.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

The collaboration wit Ritsue Mishima was a natural choice for Perrier-Jouët, entirely in line with its history: it echoes the House’s close bond with nature, the active dialogue it has always maintained with art and design, and the desire to bring beauty to everyday life.

Ritsue Mishima has adopted glass to express a vision of nature in which harmony is born from the reflections of light over an infinite variety of shapes. Accordingly, with a century between them, the Japanese artist is following in the footsteps of Émile Gallé, continuing this celebration of nature and its wonders and highlighting Perrier-Jouët’s deep ties to the Art Nouveau movement.

EPHEMERA BY MISCHER‘TRAXLER

Exploring the magical conversation between Mankind and Nature, “Perrier-Jouët presents Small Discoveries by mischer’traxler’“ is an extended collaboration between the Vienna-based design team and the champagne house that will pay tribute to life itself.

The masterwork “Ephemera” reflects on the beautiful transience of nature, of being and not being, the known and unknown. Inspired by the natural references in Art Nouveau, it enchants the audience with a delicate game of hide-and-seek played out through a mechanical ornamental garden, inviting participation, discussion and questioning.

A great oak table is inlaid with botanical motifs that appear to be alive from afar, as plants and insects move. But on approach, the garden disappears. A mirror seems to have a life of its own too. From a distance, flowers grow across the glass, up and even out of the frame. On closer inspection, the plant retracts and the mirror becomes just that, a mirror.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

“mischer’traxler create work that is both intelligently crafted and inspired by the natural world using a balance of traditional and newer technologies, which results in pieces that are rooted in familiarity, yet high concept.”

Katharina Mischer and Thomas Traxler founded Studio mischer’traxler in Vienna in 2009. Merging artisanal craftsmanship with cutting edge technology, they develop products, furniture and kinetic installations that muse on the emotional, environmental and philosophical nature of what makes good design.

Their original creations for Small Discoveries will be exhibited in selected venues across the world, before joining Perrier-Jouët’s private collection of Art Nouveau pieces at the Maison Belle Epoque.

PHARE NO° 1-9 BY SIMON HEIDJENS

Revealing the poetry of the natural world through an immersive, avant-garde narrative, Simon Heidjen’s captivating light work seamlessly blends art, craft, design and new techniques to take Art Nouveau definitively into the 21st century.

With Phare N°1-9 Heijdens has found a completely new way of drawing and building up images. Delving to the core of Art Nouveau and its principles of studio-based, crafted art-pieces and merging the organic with avant-garde technology, he opens up the static character of our structured surroundings and breaks the boundaries of how we experience the natural world.

Nine hand-blown vessels use the dimensional qualities of water and the way it refracts light to trace the hidden essence of the spaces and objects that surround us. Creating an ever-evolving story, a living drawing, the all- white environment becomes a screen and a narrative to pass through, pause and experience from different perspectives.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

“I try to bring back a sense of nature and coincidence back into the homogeneity of the everyday.” Simon Heijdens

Simon Heijden’s vision, craftsmanship and remarkable take on the natural world reveal the principals of art and beauty in everyday life in a totally new way.  Just as Art Nouveau saw Jules Chèret introduce the printed poster and Louis Lumière create moving pictures, Heijden presents a new medium of expression that echoes the aesthetic innovation of the period.

LOST TIME BY GLITHERO

A rare and exceptional installation by London-based design duo Glithero, Lost Time draws on the work of Spanish artist Antoni Gaudi to translate the natural voluptuous curves of the Art Nouveau movement into a pure, experiential moment.

Gaudi’s goal was to find nature’s purest, most perfect curve for the Safrada Famila Church in Barcelona, which he achieved through a unique architectural model: a multitude of weighted strings draped from the ceiling.

Inspired by the sudden change of atmosphere, the ultimate stillness inside the Perrier-Jouet cellars – Glithero’s weighted, beaded strings hang like the dewdrops under the vaults. Below, a shallow pool of water captures the optical effect of light and contrast to create a similar sense of disorientation and timelessness - and offer a privileged environment for transformation.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

“In response to the Art Nouveau style, we have shifted the emphasis from the figurative representation of nature to capture the pure experience of nature”. Sarah Van Gameren, Glithero.

Tim Simpson and Sarah van Gameren, a couple in both work and life, founded Glithero after having met while studying at the Royal College of Art. From their mews studio in London, they make products, furniture and installations that present “ the beauty in the moment things are made”.

Today, that beauty is visible in the magical cave they’ve created in the Perrier-Jouet cellars beneath the Maison Belle Epoque, where chandelier-like loops of chain suspended above water recall and reinterpret Lost Time.
